Who am I? Sometimes I wonder how I became a knifemaker. As a child, I was always fascinated by knives. When my father was young, he apprenticed as a butcher. I would watch with fascination as he steeled his large carving knife to cut up the family roast. At this moment in time, I can hear my Nana ask Dad to cut the turkey.
Yes, that could be the moment I became fascinated with knives. My love of the outdoors began with walks with my Dad. I was fortunate to live on the north coast when my Dad transferred to Terrace. Talk about fishing…in my time there I caught my first Chinook, Steelhead, and Coho. Knives, axes, campfires, and tenting were all part my upbringing. When times got difficult in my youth, the outdoors kept me grounded and helped to create productive choices.
Fast forward to my forty years of service in telecommunications, a mentor of mine sent me an email about retirement. As chance would have it, I visited the Dawson Creek Sportsmen’s show and met my friend-to-be Neil Ashworth at his booth. He asked, “Hey want to build a knife?” Neil’s a man you will not forget: 6 foot 6, beard, and of Viking descent. "For sure… When?" was my reply.
With Neil's guidance, I began my legacy knife to commemorate the passing of my dad. I inherited his 1929 double bitted axe. Placining a new handle on his axe I had a great piece of hicory to use on the commentative knife. This was the beginning of a new lifestyle,
The model is a Kechika River if you are interested, a favorite of mine. I showed my build to my friends and a few of them wanted knives for their company employees. I asked my friend Neil and together we started to build knives. Lots and lots of knives. I was enjoying myself and hey I started retirement. One day Neil says to me “You need a maker's mark; you should come up with a mark for your knives.”
During my life, I have traveled for a variety of reasons mostly to reset, reground, and release negativity. Fishing or a long hike to the top of a mountain are examples. One such memorable moment was a journey to Tulum Mexico. Early in the morning, I arrived on the beach beneath the Tulum Pyramid. The sun rose from the east rising out of the Atlantic Ocean. A new day a new reset the end of dark speaking metaphorically.
Light Knives makers mark is the sunrise at Tulum many years ago. The arch of the water and the knife rays of the sun rising above the blue ocean waters.
When I mark your knife, I revisit the rays of light rising from the ocean. Light Knives began as a son remembering his moments of love, the grinding began with the fellowship of friends and mentors with service to you I am, Creating one dream at a time I wish everyone much joy and happiness.
